President Putin’s war may result in a new settlement of economic affairs – but not the one he’s expecting. While his intent is to make Russia a leading nation on many fronts, there are signs to suggest he’s not made progress well, and if hard times are up ahead, his leadership will be on shaky ground in Moscow.
His economic improvement works programs have garnered some praise elsewhere, meaning Russia has systems in place that look more mainstream to outside observers than in its Soviet past, and it has impressed people. Yet considerations of what this now means have been slow to come out.
In short, in the near future economic reports will show expected changes according to international rules and norms. They may even meet the definitions of terms accepted in the Western world. It cannot explain the whole of the Russian situation, but if matters match trends economists study, news of Russian rises and falls could change things.
