Military Intelligence

  • MI5: Far back beginnings

The start of MI5 as an activity is not as widely understood as some of its successes. This is due to its clandestine nature to begin with and how it needed to develop to an activity that has over 10,000 paid staff at present.

In fact, both MI5 and MI6 activities share a common heritage. It’s believed that either had its influence to start off with from military experts that had all situated themselves in Dover, a port town along our South coast.

It’s a common thing in military terms for it to happen in our previous and modern history. It’s due to the prominence of some locations and the significance of others.

This has meant teams of advisers have often used particular spots to think things through. This has carried forward for many decades and many towns and not a few cities have a preeminence in these circles that others don’t.

The startup mentality has overshadowed the early beginnings of hundreds of government initiatives, some of which have become departments.

Over time, these such meeting formats have become a target for infiltration by nefarious powers. Yet, it’s held strong because as much as the negative always happens, the positive is much far ahead of it, and outstrips it.

The influence of Dover as a place on its early formation is not widely understood, either, but the town itself plays a huge role in being the focus of maritime activity.

This constant flow of goods and use of services acts now as an inlet for understanding about how the world works. This is the sort of information that is necessary to any age of Intelligence, even if it’s in a primitive state such as at the start of the 20th century.

  • MI5: Under a national remit

If what MI5 does is a subject of constant review, its in its buildings and offices. It isn’t likely that any single staff member will have a settled view on the matter, so it has to be taken as having been settled by those previous.

It means that as they work they also get to stipulate what others might do.

This passes on the knowledge and the format of the work as people enter and exit their jobs. It matters, therefore, how senior someone is as to how far their ideas get put into the system, as it were.

It can be that some have more influence and see more effect to their choices than others. This is part of the hierarchy that’s necessary to its overall purpose.

It also establishes who doesn’t get to say what’s what and what doesn’t just get put in because it seems right to do so.

I’ve met a number of MI5 staff who said their ideas had begun “to see the light” many years after they had worked out a fix for something. In one instance this had to do with telecommunications.

It’s therefore a national pursuit that MI5 has across all the four nations of the Union. It’s not international, as if the UK is made up of countries that aren’t aligned with each other.

This breakup wouldn’t occur in our lifetime, so I’ve been told, because of how much work goes into keeping it all safe and secure. It’s sounds like an apt assessment of things.

As I’ve observed MI5 staff at work, as I’ve done on many occasions, it’s occurred to me that secrecy is the name of the game for them, as it is for anyone else worldwide.

It enables it to stay safe from their adversaries even as they have to fight them off. It also helps them to observe what threats are developing and to counter them as it builds.

  • MI6 is our name in the game

MI6 – or SIS to some people – is the name of our remit in the international world of spying, espionage, and Intelligence gathering. In fact, these are just some of the words or terms used to describe what it is, but they’re popular and so it makes sense to use them.

The actual body or office that is MI6 (SIS) has a lot of functions, and a lot to do in world affairs. It may be AI now or some other technology later, or healthcare and its uncertain status, or military funding and how it works. Whatever it is, its staff is supposed to be particularly good at making sure we’re safe whatever the future is like.

Blaise Metreweli (DG) as the head of MI6 – or SIS – speaking in Vauxhall Cross, in London, on Monday.

The speech by its newest head on Monday, Blaise Metreweli, was a succinct explanation of how it stands at the present moment. It’s a developing situation on all fronts according to insiders, but what they can say is where they’ve got an upper hand on our behalf.

The rest is always a work in progress, and it shows on the faces of its representatives that meet people to account for it from time to time. It’s worth having, and its usefulness is put into our main institutions daily, as well as into our main innovations as a State over time.

  • MI6 failed us on Dover

MI6 – or SIS, to some people – is a body that purports to handle Intelligence gathering but also spying overseas. It’s a highly technical and specialised type of role to have, if you’ve got one.

The trouble is, MI6 has been in dire straits since its move to Vauxhall Cross, a building in London that’s specially built for it.

It’s alleged Civil Servants didn’t plan properly or appropriately for the new construction. Although the building is safe and sound for people inside, city planners weren’t given the correct information about it.

It led to huge upsets that have continued to this day. It’s believed some Civil Servants continue to stress the situation but have failed to wholly scupper or sabotage the installation of its uses.

However, it’s not just a story of Civil Servants in Whitehall. It’s also about MI6 staff themselves not providing the right information at the right time, or briefings to the right people at the right moments.

This has continued to this day, too, and it’s led to failures like the Dover Crossings, which MI6 is in part responsible for.

It’s not been possible to get a response from the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, but this isn’t unusual. They usually don’t respond to requests for comment from anyone.

It’s supposed to be a partner for the Intelligence services overseas, but it’s also known to be unhelpful. In fact, it’s been known to be “totally useless”, according to MI6 staff that can’t be named right now.

    Undercurrents

They’ve sought to take ownership of portions of its Accounts teams and some Departments to run operations of their own.

  • MI5 has a niche but it’s mismanaged

The UK’s foremost Intelligence body is in crisis. MI5 has come under severe rebuke for its employment issues.

The most important arm of the military to assessing threat has lost its footing.

The skills of those involved need to be human, now, and flow with the data.

Any other concern is a threat to its existence. It’s also a threat to ours to be distracted. It must reform or face reform.
