Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s leader in the House of Commons, gave a rousing speech at the party’s conference in Edinburgh today.

He called for Scotland to become a “normal, independent country in Europe” if it won a referendum vote in future.

The SNP would need to win back the confidence of the Scottish people first. At the general election it lost 39 seats in a defeat to Labour.

  • How elections play out

A dispute on social media is not what an election is for. It’s not a part of the plan to fall out but it’s what some want in spite of the rules.

An example is a post on X by Elon Musk. Musk contrasts his view on migration against Kamala Harris and gets a lot of attention. It has over 100 million views.

It’s not exceptional and other users who engage get big results too. One example is a reply which has over 20,000 likes by a user with a low follower count.

It’s not an accurate example for a legal issue but it meets a threshold for participation. It doesn’t achieve credibility or placate online fact checkers, however.

  • Obama stirs the pot

Barack Obama is a good case study in how things can go down. It can either go well or badly. He’s given stirring speeches but also been pilloried for policies that didn’t sit well.

As an example, in a post to his X account he points out his and Kamala Harris’ style of dress. They’re both wearing tan suits in juxtaposed photo’s. The reaction is a mixed bag.

The user with the most liked reply reacts with a critique of Obama’s Presidency, accusing him of “race baiting” people. Alternatively, a user with the second most liked reply identifies with the joke.

It’s not so much a need to be accurate but to bring out a genuine response users indicate they feel. This is the way of social media with politicians where recriminations – and plaudits – continue long after.

  • Revealed: “Chop House”

It isn’t often that you get to hear of a truly juicy story. I had my lucky day however. It was way back when I had youthful ears that pricked up at any bit of a story I could overhear. It wasn’t clear if the full story would ever be told at all, but I was gripped by it because it made so much sense.

It explained a lot of the fears and also anxieties people had at the time that were originating from far off places but lived inside them. These places aren’t ordinary towns and cities or rural areas we’ve come to know. In some periods in our history people have come together across other lines.

In this instance it happened over slaughter houses. In years since these industrial sites have been transformed, but before they were subject of intense suspicion. It was a day of rural primitivism that prevailed amongst those who believed all things like that came hand in hand.

Now we accept what we have because we believe it’s better. It wasn’t the case back then. The concerns grew stronger and yet the cry against it couldn’t raise itself. This meant an intense investigation was needed to begin and it started in a small way with small measures.

It was a start that was needed, however, and it began to unravel as soon as it began to be looked into. There were tales of people leaving abattoirs and villages beginning to thin out. This was because answers were given to pertinent questions. It was the kind of resolution that was needed.

The long story cut short is policing began to be confused with military service and in turn politics and religion were mixed in but with more words. It created a fulcrum of disturbing activity which was mixed into the rites of passage of ordinary living.

It wasn’t a cult, but it was powerful enough in its effect. It couldn’t spread institutionally so it didn’t become a movement in the way it was feared it could be. It proved sadistic enough to inspire anyone inclined to it. It was hated by the farming community and they were able to kick it out.

  • Trump ups the ante

Donald Trump is seeking to build on in-person rallies with a pre-election recruitment drive. His initiative is Trump Force 47 and it’s aimed at his supporters being volunteers.

It’s not just their money he wants but their time also.

He’s offering a chance to be a “Trump Captain” to boost his support in local communities in America. He also wants people interested in being a “Poll Watcher” to ensure it’s free and fair.

It looks more like a political draft than a play in the park.

  • Exclusive: Spy team

She was called “Surrogate” by those who knew her. They were few but this group had big plans for their future of spying in the UK. Their sights were set above the basic level of surveillance, espionage, and data with security analysis. They wanted to run spying itself, they said.

The start of an infiltration of their extremely close knit circle began in Oxford some years back. It’s a city that has gone down as a location for many controversies of late. There have been arguments, debates, and entire fallings out over major issues of policy in the UK.

This was a more sinister attempt to take hold of the most elite form of intelligence, that being spy networks, and to turn it to personal and commercial advantage. They are clandestine operations that work so technically and are managed so well they’re rarely broken into.

This plan was slightly different, but it was enough to make it possible. Their tactic had been to step out of a normal line of work and to progress their plot in stages, over time. They had surmised it would be enough.

It was a clever plan built around time and not circumstance, as it were. It entailed a lot of betrayal, deception, and focused planning to set it up in the first place. In the end, they failed to achieve it and two key suspects were seen on location and the plot was foiled.
