The differences between us aren’t getting worse, there’s just change in the proportions. This is how it’s seen by some economic researchers. They estimate 40% of the working population is on the middle ground, meaning they enjoy a prosperous life while using many of the public services and institutions that are uniquely our own.
This may alternatively be called the Middle Class, but it’s not an entirely accurate term here because the result only represents a proportion of adults that are able to have a significant degree of autonomy over their own affairs.
This shows a dynamic, low economy where the benefits of less traditional forms of social mobility such as new Universities, small consumer bank-backed loans, and popular lifestyle advice are now paying off.
While this may not suggest the UK is becoming an economic powerhouse, it means that typically lower households are finding their way out of malaise and even social outcry to forge their own routes. This freedom to choose and to find methods for increasing personal fortunes is perhaps the biggest driver of real change right now.
