Election 2024

  • Labour’s recent success

The success of a party in the House of Commons is not always dependent on the same thing, but this year’s election gives hope to MP’s their chances may have improved significantly.

In particular, Labour must be betting large on getting through legislation to increase their chances in the political stakes. It rings true already, in part because of pay increases for workers.

A brief analysis of the Commons chamber right now, post-election, reveals why there’s an advantage. The seat share for Labour spiked at the ballot box, against misery for the Tories.

While Reform UK did impressively well to get their first seat share, the Liberal Democrats are in pole position to get their mandate across stronger in the next batch of lawmaking.

  • Joe Biden ends his campaign

Joe Biden has written his resignation letter and dropped out of the race for the American presidency. It leaves the door open for Trump to assume a second term or for an insurgent Democrat candidate to take the reins.

It isn’t clear who it is yet.

The fact is Biden is walking away from his first and only term in office with a few records behind him but a tumultuous election campaign that has been cut short. Trump was shot at and he got Covid.

It’s not a good look for America at this time.

At the end of his letter Biden signed off with a short message to the American people. It doesn’t strike a despondent tone but it does suggest he feels disillusioned with any distraction that takes focus away.

“I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.”

Perhaps this election cycle has been too much for him this time around.

  • Tory woes, Labour gains

The Conservative Party are on track for their worst ever election result. According to YouGov, Labour could win 425 seats and the Conservatives just 108.

The latest data is no indication of the final outcome, but it shows that Labour are pumping hard at the polls to get people to vote.
