  • Starmer needs a new act

  • Macron loses his 7th PM

Just under a month into the job, President Macron’s seventh Prime Minister has now resigned.

It shows a deep problem set into the heart of French politics.

While some may wish it away as part of the era, it’s not easy to do so.

The tumult that French people endure is not easy to embrace, and this makes it difficult to justify or to even defend leadership.

The social discord at the heart of the problem is more than just protest, and the causes of it, but also the entanglement of migration into the very core of the jurisdiction of the French Republic.

It’s not a straightforward matter, and French voters want the representation of it to be fair but also open.

  • Starmer has a new front at the top

The exit of Angela Rayner MP (Ashton-under-Lyne/Labour) has led to a huge upheaval at the top table by the Prime Minister. He’s made some key changes to his top team.

His new Deputy is David Lammy MP (Tottenham/Labour), also Justice Secretary. This brings closer another heavyweight as he navigates a difficult Parliament.

Yvette Cooper MP (Pontefract, Castleford, and Knottingley/Labour) is now Foreign Secretary. It’s not immediately obvious why, considering her previous brief as Home Secretary.

Shabana Mahmood MP (Birmingham Ladywood/Labour) is now Home Secretary, taking over the Home Office during the Dover Crossings crisis. This is a short straw for her.

  • Canada PM Trudeau resigns

In Canada Justin Trudeau has resigned as Prime Minister. He’s stepping down after first getting elected back in 2015.

He’s won reelection twice since. His popularity is said to be low at present, on the back of a resurgent Conservative party led by Pierre Poilievre.
