  • Westminster Week: On your bike

    Wednesday

Kemi Badenoch MP (North West Essex/Conservatives) gives a drubbing to the Prime Minister in full view of himself and his front bench. Of course, while it isn’t the sort of reception he needed from anywhere in the House at this point, it’s the job of the Opposition. They can’t change tact even just to make him feel better. Also, to many in there, he’s an overconfident man at the best of times. It works.

    *

Badenoch clearly likes to list the errors of the political class of the day, but her role in it is a record the Prime Minister has gone after before himself. He likes to go on too, staging a Punch & Judy exercise between both that’s worthy of a Parliamentary debate – and fitting for Labour’s position right now.

    Thursday

Sarah Olney MP (Richmond Park/Liberal Democrats) wastes no time. She jumps at the issue of a third Heathrow runway like a red rag to a bull. Throwing figures around, she makes it sound like an awful project. In context, a flight abroad is worth paying for.

  • London transport is a growing nightmare for all

The city of London is a global leader. It means it draws in large numbers of people.

It’s not all foot traffic that’s attracted but it’s determined by the types of business activities there are.

The London authorities that look over all of this need to be aware – and have to strategise years in advance.

The point is not to share the feelings of commuters. It’s to look at the data and to provide appropriate workarounds.

    This enables life to continue.

It means no breakdowns in service. It means no temporary suspension of normal traffic controls. It means no interruption to itineraries based upon where everything is.

The Politicians that represent us need to have clear plans in their minds to help Public Service workers to do this work properly.

The end comes as we start on it.

  • Westminster Week: The important things

    Wednesday

The Prime Minister says NATO is “the single most important and effective military alliance the world has ever seen.” Answers on any type of postcard, please.

    Thursday

Heidi Alexander MP (Secretary of State for Transport) says “affordability is going to be a key priority” for Great British Railways. The rail network accounts for many millions of journeys a year, so the lucrative pull of this effort is going to be difficult to handle. It may be a priority, but is it a possibility or even a likelihood right now?

  • Caught: UK media criminals

In an exclusive for Conservative News Site, two suspects in criminal activity involving UK media outlets have been spotted in Reading, Berkshire.
