Alternative for Germany has stopped short of winning outright control of Saxony-Anhalt at state-level by just three seats in a local election that has gripped Germany and shocked European observers.
The insurgent conservative force has previously lobbied for greater representation in the nations’ politics and has now made good on its founding pledge to shake the foundations of German nationalism to lead it to new heights.
The result showed a vote share of 43.8% against just 17.2% for the Christian Democratic Union, showing a huge reversal of fortunes and determining a greater presence for the patriotic party in state politics and potentially higher.
