News Journalism

  • Founding Issues: The Telegraph’s line

The Daily Telegraph (and its sister Sunday edition) has been an institution in many houses in the UK for a long time. It forms the bulk of what many read in terms of conservative printed material.

Its website is also a burgeoning destination. Its adoption shows that longer format news journalism is also popular online, in a time when fake news spreads like wild fire.

Its columnists, writers, and reporters are admired for their incisive takes on the politics of the day. They have the insider line on the Conservative party, and its overall way of politics.

    The Daily T Podcast

In times past, it’s hit the rocks because of a traditional take on things, such as religion, culture, and society. It also draws the ire of socialists who perceive its politics to be slow.

However, a generation of politicians in the UK have found their feet by it, taking cues off its pages – and putting in their own. It’s informed win after win for the UK’s old party of state.

In the new era, podcasts, shows, and staples such as social media profiles play a supplementary role in guiding the nations discourse. It also opens it up to wider scrutiny in the UK.

  • Real-world journalism

Journalism in a big city isn’t easy, and it’s not difficult to mess it up. The lack of newer titles that sell well, reach big audiences, and draw a spectacle over proceedings is telling. The older regimes still have it all to play for. As they’ve tagged along with institutions of state for such a long time, it helps along a sense of access – and understanding.

At the end of University, you’d imagine the top destinations of choice for students are the elite companies with perks, and salaries to match. The draw is the immediacy of important work, lure of exciting future pathways, and inevitability of a better working life. It’s a tough uphill struggle, however, and few if any find it easy to handle at first.

The start of a journalists life is before even college in many instances. The journey to a nice desk in a tall building with like-minded people is not paved with three years of listening, typing, and protesting. The learning curve is the difficult part, and it’s really the only lengthy bit of it. Unfortunately, no one has yet invented a way to streamline our way to understanding more about ourselves as citizens.

To fit in, and get good work out, takes more than just winging it. There are ways to get on and get even with life, but these are not under the title “The New York Times”, or “Chicago Tribune”, but found online under self-titled, haphazard, and poorly edited profile pages. They go viral, but they make cash out of clicks and not sincere interest.

The job of getting journalism done in higher realms is not the same as a politician or any interest-based organisation, but it has its own unique culture and patterns of thought. The fitting in part happens more than once, and that’s just the day job. It all has to make sense to the naked eye as much as in your raw thinking. The balance is achieved not by being there, but by being present, and attentive to it all.

  • A new moment for American media

The news culture in America is usually typified as a sort of love-in or hate-filled rant against the state of things. The liberal left tend to agree with each other over their disdain for the right, and the radical right mash together points to get across their reasons why.

It’s unhelpful to group together pundits and projections alike along a spectrum which resembles a mental health chart. It’s down to the need for context and perspective in a nation in which it takes place. There’s a reason why some media is the way it is, and it’s cultural.

    A screenshot of FrankSpeech

Take for example FrankSpeech, a new platform designed by pillow salesman Mike Lindell, who shot to prominence due to his association with Donald Trump and the fallout of the 2020 election. It’s a setup that provides access to channels of alternative content.

The pitch is obvious from the outset; come here for America-first, news-orientated commentary. It’s the sort of thing we’re used to by now, in part due to Trump’s own bombastic style. It’s also novel, because the right don’t tend to report by themselves.

The criticisms from mainstream television, and also some online personalities, has inspired the MAGA crowd to get up on their own feet, to some extent. It’s also the emergence of new technologies that also brings in an onset of realities hard to handle.

  • Exposed: Media misgivings

There’s such a thing as trusting a literary class because it comes with having it.

In a sense we’re sort of left in the lurch.

It’s not always a good situation to be in. It means we can’t contradict views or perspectives we don’t subscribe to, necessarily.

It also means, at times, the UK is misrepresented in the worst ways. I mean across all titles, not just a few.

Take a newspaper for example which didn’t like American entrepreneur Elon Musk all that much, and you’ll get my drift.

They decided to “give him a shot”, as it were, or try him out for size, in other words.

Unfortunately, their debates turned into insults, acrimony, and name-calling.

It was all overheard, of course, and put down on record. They called him a “useless billionaire”, who “doesn’t give money to poor kids”, allegedly. It reflects badly.

The writer’s we have are seen elsewhere as being ours, so it matters. I wish it didn’t, at times. It would be a lot easier.
