Andy Burnham MP took up the Labour leadership at a muted and small event in London today. It marked a turning point for the Parliamentary party, which scored a large majority in the last general election and yet has lacked certainty over its direction.
The policy platform of Burnham, a new figure to the top level of political warring, is local to national, and it’s a trajectory that will put it on a collision course with those in central Government who think in the exact opposite terms.
No Labour MP has come through with as much energy as the man from the North, and there are high expectations from his own ranks after an enterprising start for results to follow. These will have to be found somewhere or another wobble may lead to his exit.
