Some time back, America forgot its duties to itself over responsibilities to others. Even Silicon Valley had veered too closely to philanthropy, and had nearly derailed its progress in the name of charity. The prospect of a power like America barrelling because of a felt sense of debt to others is a frightening one.
Meanwhile, as it fought wars abroad and sought Political compromise at home, many problems erupted that were not looked at. As it happens, for only a short while, Intelligence gained a reputation worldwide for professionalism and superiority over their adversaries. A fable of its dominance began to set in.
In recent times, however, such capability has come back into action. A number of key, strategic decisions at the centre show this. Americans are now seeing a resurgence of their capability. Their international presence is strengthening, even if there’s strong opposition. A new prowess on the domestic front makes its darker days look like the forlorn pages of a history book.
But to be consistent, the Republic must face up to reality. It has to pursue its enemies wherever they choose to hide, and defeat their causes no matter how numerous or inventive they may be. The time to regain a national ‘consciousness’ has arrived, but many people are waiting to cause it more trouble.
